International Women’s Day: Delia Derbyshire

As it’s International Women’s Day, we’re celebrating someone who the Guardian described as an “unsung heroine of British electronic music”, Delia Derbyshire.

Derbyshire is most famous for her work with the BBC where she realised Ron Grainer’s score for Doctor Who, creating each sound from scratch. On first hearing it Grainer’s response was to as ask, “did I really write this?”. “Most of it,” replied Derbyshire.

Delia Derbyshire was a pioneer of electronic music, with her work covered and acknowledged by several others including Sonic Boom, Apex Twin and The Chemical Brothers.
